| The ALS Association is dedicated solely to the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and has three objectives: to fund research that will lead to the eradication of ALS, to provide quality care and support for the ALS community, and to build public awareness and support for a cure. The National Office provides leadership and support for 39 independent chapters and fundraises to support the organization’s mission, including its global research program. Working in a federated model, the Vice President, Communications will support this effort. |
The Vice President, Communications will supervise a team of up to five communications professionals. Some of the team work remotely, outside of the Washington D.C. headquarters. Additionally, the Vice President, Communications will provide some direction to the Development team in a matrixed relationship.
JOB SUMMARY: Core duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned. Strategic Initiatives: In partnership with the EVP, Communications and Development, the VP, Communications will: Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance The ALS Association’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities and increase the visibility of it programs across key stakeholder audiences. Create a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow The ALS Association leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted audiences, including the media, donors and potential donors. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them. Oversee the strategic direction for chapter websites to ensure a seamless user experience; as well as taking responsibility for the development and implementation of a roadmap that translates The ALS Association’s mission onto the web in order to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and to help meet the strategic goals of the organization. Provide guidance to ALS Association chapters in developing communications strategies, maintaining communications programs and in facilitating two-way communication between the affiliates and the national office – necessary to identify stories, maximize media results and foster internal communications.
Communications and Marketing Operations: Serve as the primary liaison with an outside agency to aggressively pursue and increase media coverage, including capitalizing on opportunities associated with events, breaking news and universal issues Oversee development of The ALS Association’s print communications including Vision and Research ALS Today, the annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including the design and maintenance of The Associations’ website. Manages relationships with associated vendors. Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization. Identify and recruit celebrities and manage The Association’s relationship with these individuals in order to maximize attention given to issues of importance to The Association. Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, ALS Association programs, special events, public announcements and other projects. Oversee day to day activities of the communications and marketing teams, including budgeting, planning and staff development.
